What is Montessori?

The Montessori Method was pioneered by Italian doctor Maria Montessori at the end of the nineteenth century. It has, as its central idea, freedom for the child within a carefully-structured environment. It is based on mutual respect and co-operation.

The teacher in a Montessori classroom is more of a guide than an instructor, someone who recognises that all children are intrinsically motivated to learn, and that they absorb knowledge without effort when provided with the right kind of activities at the right stage of development.

The Method

The key observation of Dr. Montessori, which has been reinforced by modern research, is the importance of ‘sensitive periods’ for early learning. These are periods of intense fascination for learning a particular characteristic or skill – such as investigating small objects, putting things in order, counting, or understanding the sounds and meanings of individual letters or words.

It is easier for a child to learn a particular skill during the corresponding sensitive period than at any other time in his or her life.

At The Magic Tower we carefully monitor every child’s progress to identify these and encourage the child to select individual activities that correspond to, and reinforce these crucial phases in their development.

Daily Life at the Magic Tower

We put all these key factors and considerations into practice with trained staff to help children develop independence, concentration, co-ordination and motor skills through Montessori exercises for practical life. Children also refine their five senses using sensorial apparatus.

The children are introduced to Mathematics, Reading and Writing activities at an early age so we can help them to develop these skills throughout the period they are here with us.

They are also given an introduction to Geography, History and Science and they have the opportunity to learn simple French. We also include Music and Art in our daily routine to encourage the children to express themselves.
